A video filmed at 300 fps of an axolotl trying to snatch up a food pellet. (Unfortunately, it fails both times to swallow the pellet.) Playback is slowed down to about 10x, and then 50x the actual speed of the feeding reflex. Filmed with a Casio Exilim EX-F1. Video quality is certainly not the best, but the video is still interesting, I think.

I found my pet antlion during a field trip with the entomology class to Colockum Research Station near Wenatchee in Eastern Washington. I've always been amazed by antlion traps and wondered how exactly the animals made them, and how long their construction took. Looking online, I couldn't find any really good videos of this process. Since I was eager to try out time-lapse videography anyways, I set my antlion in a small dish and let a DV camera snap an image every second for about 48 hours until I finally had the first movie. Building the pit only took about an hour, but I had a hard time to get the antlion to make one while the camera was trained on it (shyness?).

This post shows an animated schematic of my experimental setup, an LED arena for behavioral research in flying insects. I modeled the moth in Blender and gave it an image texture from photos I took of Manduca sexta. The setup itself was then modeled in Google Sketchup. Most of the video transitions were done with the help of basic video editing capabilities of Apple's Quicktime software.

The following video of two dancing butterflies was shot at 500 frames per second at the Seattle Pacific Science Center with a Phantom Miro 4 high-speed video camera.
